Essay

This thesis examines several theoretical proposals for controlling atomic and mo-lecular mo-tion using coherent and partially coherent laser light, with particular at-ten-tion to the depen-dence of the population transfer from the ground to the target state by stimulated Raman adiaba-tic passage on detuning from resonance, as well as phase and amplitude fluctuations. It describes a new method for two-photon excitation of hydrogen that produces atoms in the metastable 2s state by two laser fields, and examines schemes for transferring multiple-photon momentum to light atoms. These include atom interactions with counterpropagating waves (frequency-modu-la-ted, bichromatic, phase or amplitude fluctuating waves and short pulses); such situations can pro-duce radiative forces much stronger than those produced by running waves. Scattering of atoms by the field of two counterpropagating pulses is considered.
