Essay

The dissertation proposes a model of the orientational space of contemporary English media discourse as a verbal and visual reality created by mass media with regard to the human orientation in the world. The paper proves that the construal of events in the media discourse orientational space is grounded relative to four dimensions: lexico-grammatical, nominative-syntactic, textual, and hypertextual. Hypertext determines the non-linear layout of images, headings and texts according to the order of the addressee's visual orientation. The lexico-grammatical dimension accommodates the verbal units of construing referents. The nominative-syntactic dimension covers the subject-predicate means of establishing relations between referents. The textual dimension rests on the strategies and tactics aimed at construing events that pertain to the audience's needs as well as to perceptual, spatial, and temporal coordinates. The structuring and interaction of the dimensions are subordinated to the purpose of influencing people by construing media reality in specific ways.
