This thesis suggests a methodology of cognitive-poetic analysis of Shakespeare’s tragedies, based on linguistic assumptions of poetics viewed from a cognitive perspective. The conceptual space of the tragic is claimed to be formed by literary concepts of the tragic as basic units of Shakespeare’s artistic cognition conditioned by his understanding of the tragic and requirements of tragedy as a dramatic genre. Identification of literary concepts of the tragic is presented as a multistage technique of analysis. The research focuses on the complicated, hierarchical structure of a literary concept, each layer being modelled in its particular way: physically perceptible – as a frame, figuratively associative – as a set of conceptual tropes, notional – as an associative-semantic field. It is proved that systemic interconnections of literary concepts within the conceptual space of the tragic determine its structure presented as a conceptual network. Various types of ties between the associative-semantic fields of literary concepts are proved to define the contours of the conceptual space of the tragic in Shakespeare's plays and help to reveal its dominant sense which differs from the Renaissance worldview with its optimistic perception of man as a harmonious personality.
