Essay

The degree of weed contamination of vineyards in seven vine-growing areas of Ukraine has been studied, and the specific weed composition has been established. Susceptibility of dominating weed species to herbicides used in viticulture has been assessed. The degree of influence exerted by herbicides on grape plants' growth, development and productivity, and also on size and quality of yields has been determined. The effects of the degree of weed contamination on distribution of fungal diseases (oidium, mildew and gray rot) and pathogens and on economical damage caused by these factors have been evaluated. Algorithms predicting influence of the degree of weed contamination on the productivity of grape plants have been developed. A technology to control weeds in one- to three-year old vineyards, nurseries and commercial plantings has been developed and put into use in the Crimea and in Kherson, Nikolaev and Odessa provinces of Ukraine. The technology to control weeds in vineyards under different ecological conditions has been examined from an economical standpoint.
