Essay

Object of research - wetting and impregnation processes. Purpose - experimental determination and analysis of regularities of carbon, oxides, carbides, nitrides films dependung the structure and size factor. Research methods and equipment: sessile drop method, RS, IR-, XAES, XPS, EELS, SEM, AFM, thermodesorption mass spectrometry. Theoretical results and novelty: the size dependence of surface energy and wetting angle for polycrystalline diamond films with graine size varying from 100 mkm to 5 nm has been defined. The correlation has been established between the wettability and the structure ordering as well between the wetting angle and the type of hybridization and bond ionicity. Practical results and novelty: the principles of the formation of superhydrophobic carbon coatings; new approach to estimate the chemical stability of diamond-like protective coatings by their wetting; new in situ observing technique of movement the liquid metal melt front into porous medium during impregnation.
