Essay

theoretical and empirical project for anthroponomical studies of American Romanticism is carried out. The thesis focuses on the problem of a personal name which is analyzed within the framework of a pluralistic approach - in the historical perspective of its cultural discourse, in the paradigm of its textual manifestation and in the context of its functioning in the works of American Romanticists. Such an approach helps to expose ontological and gnosiological characteristics of a proper name, to clear up notional aspects and the volume of this phenomenon. At the same time, differentiation between two nominative strategies -"by agreement" and "by nature" makes for actualization of "by nature" nomination in the sphere of a literary text since the author nearly simultaneously creates a hero, gives him a name and thinks out his destiny. Thus, the literary name and the character have the same existential essence, belong to the same textual reality. Realization of this fact helps to focus further attentionon the questions of conceptualization and pluralistic interpretation and to carry out a large-scale complex investigation of anthroponomical paradigm embracing a whole number of different strategies, methods and cognitive components. Such an investigation would be boundless were it not limited and determined by particular historical and literary frames. In our case it is based on a detailed study of short stories (W.Irving, N.Hawthorne, E.A.Poe) and novels (J.F.Cooper, H.Melville) of the most distinguished romantic writers in the USA. Systematic analyses of different levels of anthroponomical functioning in their works promoted formation of a literary anthroponomical model as a dynamic unity of literary name's semantic field and hierarchy of functioning levels. In the process of its analytical implementation literary anthroponomical model acquires the status of a full-fledged concept as it realizes totality of external and internal meanings of a literary name, what corresponds to its constructive function inthe text.
