Essay

Object of the study: epidemiology of the diagnosed diabetes mellitus (DM) in Ukraine Aim of the study: to analyze the structure of aetiological types, gender and age features, prevalence, trends of incidence, risk factors of non-fatal events and mortality among Ukrainian DM patients. Methods and equipment: observational epidemiological studies using a nation-wide patient register. Theoretical and practical results: T1D incidence and mortality trends, as well as T2D mortality and non-fatal events risks were estimated. A significant risk has been revealed among young women with T1D vs women without T1D, this risk being much higher than this ratio in men. All-cause and cardiovascular mortality is higher in glibenclamide-treated patients vs glyclaside-treated ones. Novelty Degree of introduction: For the first time, a positive relationship has been revealed between prevalence of T1D and its characteristics which reflect a severe course of disease. It has been shown that in Ukraine the relative risk of T1D development in adults is higher for men, while T2D risk is higher for women. An age-adjusted analysis of T2D prevalence suggests a possible influence of mass famine periods on the risk of T2D development. Degree of implementation: patents have been issued, guidelines for assessment of insulin prescription data for T1D have been published. Area of using: endocrinology, epidemiology, health care.
