Essay

The thesis deals with Ukrainian Soviet historiography of Post-Stalinist period in relation to its treatment of Ukrainian history. It examines the interaction of social and intellectual factors which influenced the professional study of the past. The ideas, interpretations and concepts which formed the notion of Ukrainian history in historical science in the mid 1950s and the mid 1980s have been analyzed. A heavy dependence of Ukrainian Soviet historiography on its political and ideological context has been detected. It has been concluded that historical narrative in Ukraine was greatly influenced by awoken in the process of liberalization ethnic national consciousness of Ukrainian historians. It has been proved that nonconformist tendency prevailed in historical science of UkSSR in late 1950s and early 1970s..
