Essay

The Dissertation is devoted to the analysis and study of the accounts contained in Arabic written documents about the territory and population of Ukraine during the Pagan period of its Medieval history. The selection and systematization of textual material have been made on the basis of the methodological principles formulated by the author of this research. It has been revealed that the works of Arabic literature of the 9-10 centuries reflect the following ethnical and historical processes during the initial stage of the forming of Ukrainian ethnic group confrontation between the ancestors Ukrainians, settled farmers, and the nomadic Hungarian and Turkic cattle-breeders who temporarily inhabited the steppe zone of South Ukraine; ethnic consolidation of the Slavs in the Middle Dnieper and East-Carpati an regions when Kievan State was formed and the active development of its economic ties with the Byzantine Empire and the domains of the Arabic Khaliphate, spread of the general name "Rus" to the Slavic ethnic communities, included in Kievan State, in the capacity of the designation of their citizenship
