Essay

This dissertation is the first complex research in Ukrainian historiography which studies the processes of forming, expansion and perception of different versions of memory of the Third Reich forced labourers by case studies in post-war West German, Soviet and modern Ukrainian societies. Analysis of various sources made it possible to define the main stages of reflection/creation of historical memory of forced labour under German National Socialism during World War II in scholarly and public discourses in the Federal Republic of Germany, to reveal features and to characterize evolution of scholarly, journalistic and artistic presentation of the Third Reich forced labourers' images in the framework of official Soviet historical memory of Great Patriotic War, to study specificity of introducing the problem of forced labour and relevant compensation payments into the public field of post-Soviet Ukraine and to determine the main trends in scholarly interpretation of the forced labour phenomenon in modern Ukrainian historiography.
