Essay

The thesis is devoted to the contrastive study of the word-forming verb category of causation. The research is based on the theory of universal character of the lexical-semantic category of causation and its specific character. It is accounted for by fact that the languages under consideration belong to different typological classes. German and Ukrainian have no grammatical category of causation, it is compensated by the corresponding word-forming category comprised by derivative causative verbs (DCV). The many-sided analysis of DCV's has been carried out, namely the study of their structural, semantic and functional characteristics. Such a system approach makes it possible to reveal the mechanism of DCV forming and functing in the German and Ukrainian language, distinguish structural and semantic types of DCV's. The system of DCV's in German and Ukrainian has been analyzed for the first time, the lacunes in rendering individual meanings of causation in the languages under study have been distinguished, the semantic component of constructions with DCV's and means for their expression on the syntactic level have been identified. The hypothesis concerning common and divergent features of forming and functioning of DCV's with the majority of allomorphic features caused by different word-forming systems of German and Ukrainian in general has been proved.
