Essay

The dissertation focuses on the interlingual study of the paradigmatics and syntagmatics of Ukrainian and English verbal systems in the lexical-semantic and formal syntactical aspects. The common and different features of the verbal categorical mechanism at various levels have been determined through a bilateral comparison, subject to the deduced and theoretically substantiated tertium comparationis, viz. the universal verbal category of process. The correlative and lacunative areas of the semantic paradigmatics of the universal verbal category of process have been delineated. The interlingual syntagmatic parametric correlation between the systems in terms of autosemantics / synsemantics has been characterized. The similar and dissimilar features of the clause-generating potential of Ukrainian and English verbal systems have been revealed.
