Essay

Based on the systematic analysis of the complex of the sources, the process of social and political development of the Bosporus society and state was reconstructed, the factors and regional peculiarities of its development were traced. The content analysis of the term "polis", which is found in the Ancient Greek sources, determines its diachronic polysemy. The author justifies the proposal to limit its semantic meaning by using the terms "city", "civic community" while determining the specific character of the development of the Bosporan state. Based on the spatial and chronological patterns of settlement organization in the Bosporan Kingdom zoning of its territory was carried out. Its step-by-step development was made more concrete. The relative independence of the existence of the polis centres within the state was established. The state of the Bosporan society in certain periods was examined and the importance of the barbaric component in the social and political development of the Bosporus was determined.
