Essay

Object of investigation: black shale sequences, oil and gas of Carpathian region; subject of studies: postsedimentary evolution of organic-rich rocks and related hydrocarbons’ generation; methods of investigation: chemical, isotopic, gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric, Rock-Eval pyrolysis; practical value: results of rocks’ generative properties investigation allow estimating the spatial occurrence of the prospective for oil and gas sedimentary successions within the different structural-tectonic units of Carpathians and their foredeep; scientific novelty: the quantitative characteristics of generative properties of the main potential source-rock successions of the different structural-tectonic units of the region is given; the depth-related evolution of the hydrocarbons generation processes by the black shale sequences is studied; the reconstruction of sedimentary and tectonic burial and the rocks maturation history with related hydrocarbons’ generation processes is made; it is shown that major part of gas from the autochthonous molasse has the low-temperature bacterial origin, while oil and gas of the flysch belt have been formed as a result of thermogenic processes; oil, gas and bitumen correlation is made; three independent petroleum systems are identified in the region; spheres of use: oil and gas geochemistry.
