Essay

The thesis is devoted to the problem of etiology, diagnostics and pathogenetic mechanisms of acute bacterial and viral meningitis. The efficiency of the PCR method has been proven for early etiological diagnostics of meningitis, and most common causative agents of acute meningitis in the Kharkiv region have been established. For the first time in Ukraine, PCR was used for identification of N.meningitidis DNA of serogroups A, B, C. A new biological method has been developed for rapid diagnostics of bacterial meningitis and detection of bacterial endotoxin level in CSF with use of hemolymph of caterpillar Bombyx mori and Pieris brassicae. Based on a comprehensive study of cytokine system, markers of inflammation and apoptosis previously unknown pathogenetic data have been obtained concerning the nature of changes of the studied parameters; and their differential diagnostic value for determination of the etiology of the meningitis has been established. On this basis, the algorithm of the differential diagnostics of acute bacterial and viral meningitis has been developed. The efficiency of succinic acid preparations in the treatment of acute meningitis of any etiology has been proven.
