Essay

For the first time in the national historiography a complex analysis of the history of Spain in the years of rule of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party has been made in the research thesis, and main reasons of its victory and time in power for a lengthy period of time (1982-1996) have been determined. The period of rule of the socialists coincided with the consolidation of democracy in Spain. The author has determined peculiarities of the conditions of development of democratic principles in Spain. A systematic complex of factors causing successful flow of transformations has been presented. In the first part the author makes a historiagraphic analysis of the referred topic and offers an analysis of versatile sources and methods of research. The second part "Domestic political development of Spain in the years of rule of the Socialist government" describes peculiarities of strengthening of democratic principles in the political sphere. The author thoroughly studied the role of leading public institutions in the course of the referred transformations (government, Parliament, monarchy, court system, church, mass media). Important information has been included on the formation and functioning of the party and election systems, peculiarities of modernization of the army and police systems. A separate part of the thesis has been devoted to the economic development of Spain.
