Essay

For the first time in Ukrainian musicology the key issues and problems of contemporary flute performing art are being comprehensively and critically analyzed in this dissertation, new ways to master flute performance are put forward. In defining the basic priorities in the upbringing of the flute performer, the research focuses on modern concepts of psycho-physiological and methodological school, as well as introduces a new interpretation of the articulation phenomena into the realm of flute mastery. The research focuses on mastering the art of interpretation, on the development of creative thinking of pupils, students, performers and pedagogues, on the acquisition of knowledge and skills to associate vivid impressions with intonational phenomena and processes,. The research of the psycho-physiology of the flute performing process and semantic classification of articulation gain prominence for the first time. Articulation structuring promotes the accessibility of the concepts of compensation and complementarity of the qualities of expressive planes while working on the imagery and the style of the composition (the categories, which are responsible for the control and subordination in a heterogeneous audio circumstances, unstable expressive areas, acoustic "anomalies" of the flute ranges), it leads to the awareness of the relativity of the impact and the role of performing assets, the ability to reach new levels of the meaningfulness of performance by focusing performing capacities on the importance of certain layers of expressiveness in the spheres of sound and volume, tone and pitch, rhythmic and agogic planes, timbre, etc. Mastering the technology of expressive planes equips the musical performance of a flutist with the key features of professionalism, i. e. the possession of "plastic arts" (through the acquisition of "skills invariance," the merger of auditory representation and movement) and maintaining a sense of processuality under the most versatile conditions of treating musical material. The dissertation substantiates and explains the methods of organizing the breathing apparatus, lip set, musical ear, virtuoso mastery of fingering, psychological predispositions of the performer, it specifies the limits of individualization, democratization, the overcoming of common unifying dogmas in favor of a flexible subordination of a musician’s technique to a common goal, i.e. the achievement of the most profound awareness of the material performed. The wealth of factual material covers the history and primary causes of the emergence and the most important technological issues of shaping the most significant genres of flute art, the importance of composers’ and virtuosos’ mutual feedback, and the surrounding conditions of performers on the creation of the most striking examples of the flutist repertoire, it creates artistic arches and distinct allusions, involving associative processes related to analysis of samples from the related creative fields, which allows you to build comfortable and relevant information clusters of professional database, which motivate the player to seek a composition’s imagery and to form the concepts of interpretation. The figurative and thematic blocks of the dissertation material delve into the root causes of the formation and history of the common semantic roles of this musical instrument ("ornithological" area and mythological themes, illustrated, informative and style-associated aspects of the flute stage performance in fine arts; the whims of composition programmmes, etc.), they cover the widest range of the repertoire of a contemporary flutist, from the emergence, purpose and manner of interpretation of the first sonatas by M. de Labarre to the phenomenon of synthetic compositions of P. Boulez, L. Berio, H. Lachenmann, I. Yun, R. Dick, et al. The research eagerly acknowledges the outstanding achievements in the field of flute art from the ancient treatises to the recent works and experimental studies, found in the collections of scientific papers and professional editions of both Ukrainian and foreign publications.
