Essay

The paper studies the utterances that actualize confrontational senses in English-language discourse. It focuses on linguocognitive basis, communicative-cognitive mechanisms, speech means of realizing the strategic aim of confrontation. Employing the linguistic findings of communicative-discursive approach the research aims at the study of the confrontation strategy regulatory potential. The major scientific methods are contextual analysis. cognitive-discursive interpretation, frame modeling, conversational analysis, text interpretation, speech act and pragmatic-semantic analysis. The scientific novelty of the paper lies in providing the new account of confrontation as a discourse strategy and revealing its regulatory potential in the English-language discourse. The theoretical significance of the paper is determined by its contribution to the general discourse theory, communicative-discursive approach, cognitive, communicative, sociolinguistics, text linguistics, speech act theory. The practical value of the obtained results lies in the possibility to apply them in teaching the theoretical grammar of the English language (theme "Syntax"), general linguistics ("Language and Speech", "Language and thought", "Language and Society"), history of linguistic theories ("Language Communicative-Activity Theories"), courses in linguistic conflictology, discoursology, communication theory, intercultural communication, cognitive linguistics, text linguists, pragmatic syntax of the English language as well as in the process of writing research papers of different levels.
