Essay

The thesis is a study of the English historiographic novel of the end of the 20th - the beginning of the 21st cent. It attempts conceptualization of the historiographic novel as a new form of approaching the representation of history. The study deals with the specification of a theoretical, methodological, and culturological grounds of the genre, the research of its genesis and its relation to the traditional historical novel. Particular attention is paid to looking into genre's philosophy. It also examines the causes of actualization of a historical discourse in English literature at the turn of the century. For many contemporary British novelists, a disturbed sense of "Englishness", produced by the Britain's loss of world power status and increasing ethnic and cultural diversity, may come together to stimulate fictional explorations of the past. Internationally, the global transition to a postmodern and postcolonial condition arguably caused an anxiety about the continuity and graspability of history. This sense of scepticism and uncertainty has made diverse critics and philosophers claim that the whole world is at, or beyond, the "end of history".
