The thesis deals with the investigation of the genesis of the Ukrainian historians' civilizational identity at the end of the XVIIIth - beginning of the XXth century. The current state and prospects of scientific studies of the problem of civilizational identity in the Ukrainian historical thought have been outlined. The researchers' views and ideas about the civilizational division of historical process and belonging of Ukraine to a civilization have been analyzed. The perception of images of "native" and "alien" civilizations has been traced.
