Essay

thing category, thing concept, art object, thingness and objectivity. There was also analyzed and systematized the functions of thing that were highlighted by theoreticians in the works of literature (nominative, accessory, ideologically-aesthetic, world-modelled, culturological, characterology, plot and composition functions). It was found that thing functionality in modernistic novel in the first half of 20th century goes beyond the above functions. So there is a added list of inherent function of modernistic novel (plot-generative, associative, intertextual, motive-generative, text-generative, cross-discursive). It was found that category of thing defines the worldview and stylistic features of the author and the period. Every style conveys its own vision of thing, its own ontology and axiology of the thingness and its own range of issues linking with the thingness. For instance, there were examined the motive of the real and false thing in neo-romanticism in the texts by A. Green and Y. Yanovsky, ontology and metaphysics of thing in existentialism by V. Domontovich and V. Nabokov, phenomenology of thing by E. Pluzhnyk and G. Gazdanov, idea of the thing as a text and the text as a thing in formalism by V. Shklovsky and M. Yohansen.
