Essay

The thesis focuses on the transformations of the publishing industry as a result of digitalization and convergence. By analyzing foreign and domestic academic works, a broad source base, and an array of empirical data, it provides rationalization for the concept of “digital transformation”, determines the vectors and presents a model of digital transformations in the publishing industry, covering the publishing market and digital business models (the market vector), the management system of publishing business (the managerial vector), technologies of editorial and publishing process (the workflow vector), and publishing products as a result of the editorial and publishing process (the product vector). Within the framework of analyzing the market vector of digital transformations, it was found that the digitalization of the publishing industry has triggered changes in the subject environment of the publishing market and perpetuated the development of digital business models. The reseach has also determined that digital publishing involves new players — i.e. publishers, manufacturers and distributors of publishing content specializing in editorial preparation, production and distribution of publications in electronic format and (or) using digital business models: digital publishing houses; editorial offices of independent online-media (with no print version), digital printing offices; technology companies that develop multimedia applications; digital kiosks of periodicals; news aggregators; e-book aggregators and aggregators of fragmented content.
