Essay

The character’s writing as a fictional space of the French novel is a core point of the monograph. An analytical model to deal with the fictional subject's letter about himself is offered by the author of the work. The analysis methods based on the metaphors of the French novel are demonstrated by the «graphy» part of the auto-bio-graphy formula. This study rediscovers classical French literature, introduces the new names of French writers and updates the forgotten ones, all of which is made possible by a reading of the history of the French novel through the prism of the fictional character's letter about himself. This dissertation explains the notional apparatus used in the study of the fictional landscape of the character’s letter about himself. It offers the notion of the self-writing of the fictional subject as one that allows the reader to see the peculiarities of the text as a whole, the fictional landscape of which is the character's letter. The critical focus of the work combines the history of the fictional character’s letter about himself study in French literary context with the cultural and historical phenomena of the period from the 18th to the early 21st centuries, its indices and markers (e.g. letter, diary, mnemography). This allows us to trace the transhistorical constants of the typical text letter. Special attention is paid to the communicative arch within the letter space. A set of codes is offered for the disclosure of the semantic depth and functional meaning of the character’s letter about himself in the context of the construction of the subject’s identity. The emphasis is on the influence of the letter as a narrative model on the novel as a genre. A model for the analysis of the text letter is created.
