Essay

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church’s role and importance for the modern Ukrainian society, service of chaplains in the hybrid war of Ukraine’s East and the enlightening activity of its guidance force the native and foreign modern researchers to reinterpret its historiography. The history of the repression against the Ukrainians in the mid and the second half of the 20th century proves that those repressions were targeted on the Ukrainian national movement with broad network. After 1939, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church stayed among the few organizations of national movements with its net of eparchies, priesthoods and communities. The nation building strategy of Greek Catholic guidance was dangerous for both the Soviet and the Nazi occupation government during the 40’s of the 20th century. The author of the doctoral thesis accented on the historiography analysis of religious life in the Soviet Union that allowed him to retrace a wide range of scientific researches and the deepness of the scientific heritage and studied the Ukrainian church life of the 20th century generally and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church particularly. Objective coverage of the church past of Ukraine should become part of complex system of national security, where the historical science can play the key role.
