Essay

The dissertation is devoted to precise determination of polarized light losses due to its absorption and scattering when passing through thin transitional and reflecting surface layers of media with different conductivity. It was achieved by developing, creating and using new goniopolarimetry methods and algorithms for processing experimental data. The method of multilayer systems optical characteristics computation is proposed. It is based on finding stationary amplitudes of the electric field intensity at the intermediary boundaries, taking into account the interference upon repeated reflection. Refractive index depth profiles and surface layer thicknesses for optical glass as well as changes in porous silicon surface layer dielectric constant were determined by the inverted ellipsometry problem solution. The influence of protective and interface layers on the surface plasmon absorption resonance minimum position is investigated for noble metal heterostructures. A percolation transition in island-type gold films was detected by experimentally measured dependences of Stokes vector components and Muller matrix elements on the film morphology parameters.
