Essay

The thesis is devoted to a comprehensive study of the historiography of Easter eggs of the late XIX – early XXI centuries. The results of the research work showed that historiography is represented by a significant array of the literature of different scientific value and factual content. The degree of scientific development of the problem is clarified, the classification of the source base is offered and its information possibilities are characterized. A set of methodological principles and scientific methods of the researched problem is revealed, which provided an interdisciplinary approach in the coverage of the topic, application of both general historical methods and principles, and methods of culturology and ethnology. The author’s definition of the terms «pysanka», «pysanka painting» is offered, the meaning of the term «Kyiv glazed ceramic pysanka» is specified. On the basis of archival sources of the Archival Scientific Funds of Manuscripts and Phonographs of IMFE. M. T. Rylsky, Scientific Archive of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine, stock materials of National Historical Ethnographic Reserve «Pereyaslav», NMI of Ukraine, as well as various publications. Their source study potential is revealed. The contribution of representatives of Ukrainian and Russian archeological and historical science to the study of Kyiv glazed ceramic pysanka (XI–XIII centuries) (V. Honcharov, V. Dovzhenok, M. Karger, D. Kozak, B. Kolchyn, O. Korchynsky) is clarified., Yu. Lukomsky, T. Makarova, A. Mongait, Y. Morgunov, O. Motsya, J. Pasternak, V. Petrashenko, V. Povetkin, B. Rybakov, O. Ratich, I. Sveshnikov, I. Starchuk, A Sushko, G. Shovkoplias, R. Yura, and others). The factual level, completeness of the information, and thematic representativeness of historiographical sources from regional, foreign, art, and museum studies of pysanka are established. In particular, it is noted that in the historiography of Easter eggs of the late XIX – early XX centuries highlights aspects related to the rites and customs of making Easter eggs. The technical and technological features of painting and production of Easter painted eggs are most fully revealed in the literature of this period. Among the great variety of literature, articles with information about the customs and ornamentation of Easter eggs predominate.
