Essay

The thesis focuses on the study of pragmatic and cognitive characteristics of metacommunication as the tool of the manipulative influence on the addressee in different discourse types. It also considers cognitive and discourse modelling of English manipulative metacommunication. The research clarifies the notion of metacommunication in accordance with cognitive and semantic features of the prefix "meta-"; consequently, metacommunication has been viewed as a cognitive and pragmatic phenomenon based on metapragmatic awareness, the latter being cognitive, pragmatic and discourse in nature. Parallel to metacommunication that organizes and correlates speakers’ interaction by means of strategic, pragmatically intentional usage of stereotyped cliche structures, manipulation presupposes intentional hidden influence on the addressee (both individual and mass) causing some changes in his/her behaviour. From this perspective, the manipulative metacommunication has been defined as the cognitive and discourse entity which reflects the scheme of intentionally hidden indirect emotional influence of the addresser on the addressee’s consciousness in order to correct his/her speech behaviour.
