Dovzhynets I. Sumy musical environment in the context of modern musicology

The dissertation is dedicated to a problem of musical environment. The formation of the phenomenon is studied on the material of Sumy town musical history. In the study the following goals are achieved: peculiarities of the environment as a natural and social cultural phenomenon are characterized; characteristics of musical environment are described, definition of the notion «musical environment» is given; methodology of the investigation of musical environment is worked out; formation of musical environment of Sumy town within the dynamics of historical development (since the end of XIX until the beginning of XXI centuries) is investigated, periodization of stages of this process is worked out, influence of social and political component upon transformations of Sumy musical environment is determined; development of musical education in connection with the processes of musical environment of the town is elucidated; choir art as a factor of musical environment is considered; the role of creative individual in the modifications of musical environment is explained; modern trends of functioning of musical environment of the town are determined. The material used in the study are documents from funds of state archive establishments: publications in periodicals, musical critical articles, epistolary heritage, minutes of the meetings, business correspondence, sheet music manuscripts and printed issues, photomaterial as well as personal and family historical documents, in particular, memoirs, diaries, autobiographical notes, interviews, obituary notices, concert records, pedagogical notes, contemporaries` reminiscences. Basing upon terminological analysis it is determined that the notion «musical environment» is universal as it covers all components of sound music product processes, spreading of this product, its perception; musical environment is an integral phenomenon based on musical activity. The following definition is formulated: «musical environment is sound surrounding which is formed in the process of musical activity and covers all its components: creativity, performance, spreading and perception. Musical environment is conditioned by time-space factors and dynamics of social changes».
