The thesis for the first time in Ukrainian jurisprudence carried out a theoretical generalization and proposed a new solution to the scientific problem of theoretical and legal conceptualization of the phenomenon of national security in modern Ukraine. The author notes that security as a general scientific category implies the state of security of the existence of a nation, humanity, individual, family – protection of their immanent essence, conditions of existence and life in general. The thesis reveals the main domestic and foreign scientific and legal approaches to the definition of the phenomenon of national security. For the first time, the author proposes to apply the category ‘conceptualisation of national security’, which, from the point of view of legal theory, reflects the key state and legal regularities of emergence, functioning and changes in the phenomenon of national security in the system of public relations which are necessary, purposeful and natural. The author found that the first proto-scientific ideas about the conditions and forms of ensuring the safety of the individual, society and state appeared in the countries of the Ancient East long before our era. The basis for the emergence of the discourse on security of the individual, society and the state was the conditions of practical existence of early state formations, primarily the civilisations of ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, India and China. They were closely linked to the ideas of independence and free development of peoples, the struggle against enslavement, exploitation and oppression, and the search for methods and means of preserving vast empires, which were crucial for the development of human civilisation. At the same time, ancient Eastern political and legal thought has not yet separated the security of society from the security of the state, due to the dominance of the phenomenon of Eastern despotism in political and legal life. It is proved that the ancient Greek political and legal thought demonstrated a wide panorama of original security views in the context of fundamental political and legal concepts which reflected the complex dialectic of the relationship and interaction of the individual, society, law and the state. The author identified and studied three periods of development of security issues against the background of the evolution of the ancient Greek intellectual tradition: 1) the early (archaic) period (the 9th–8th — the 6th century BC); 2) the classical period (the 5th — the first half of the 4th century BC); 3) Hellenistic period (the second half of the 5th — the 2nd century BC). Detailed description of security ideas within each period is provided. The author also analyses the content of security concepts in the works of ancient Roman thinkers, which allowed to distinguish three periods of development of security studies against the background of the evolution of the ancient Roman intellectual tradition: 1) the royal period (the mid of the 8th — the late of 6th century BC); 2) the republican period with a division into the ancient republican (the late of the 6th — the 3rd century BC) and late republican (the 3rd — the late of the 1st century BC) periods; 3) the imperial period with the allocation of the periods of the Principate or Early Empire (the late of the 1st century BC — the late of the 3rd century AD), and the Dominate or Late Empire (the late of the 3rd — the late of the 5th century AD).
