Object of investigation: interrogative sentences in the English speech communication of the 16th-20th c. The main task of investigation is a complex pragmatic study of the historical development of interrogative sentences in English in speech act and discourse. Methods of investigation are speech act modelling, communicative, intentional, logical and semantic analysis, elements of sociolinguistic, ethnocultural and statistic analysis. Theoretical and practical investigation results: defining a conceptual basis for historical pragmatics, working out principles of speech act modelling, a complex description of historical development of sentence pragmatic features. The novelty of results obtained: the work is the first in native Germanic philology elaboration of principles for diachronic studies of sentence pragmatics, in it an aspect model of speech acts is suggested, the pragmatic potential of interrogative sentences in En glish is found out ant its historical dynamics are described.Degree of implementation: the investigation results are used in courses of general linguistics, theoretical and practical grammar of English, historical pragmatics. Sphere of application: teaching general linguistics, theoretical and practical grammar of English, graduate and post-graduate students' research work, translation.
