Essay

The thesis is devoted to the research of allegory that denotes the images of the animal world in the Ukrainian literary texts of the end of the XX – the beginning of the XXI century. The linguistic nature of allegory is clarified, its essence is revealed and the features are characterized, the linguistic and aesthetic functions are outlined. On the basis of the thesis results there are made the author's statements, which are submitted to defense and contain elements of academic novelty. For the first time in the Ukrainian linguistics a new research unit is introduced – an allegoreme, its characteristics are determined; the distinction between allegory and a verbal symbol and metaphor is scientifically substantiated. The purpose of the work is a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the peculiarities of allegory functioning in the contemporary Ukrainian literary texts, the identification of functional and semantic parameters of allegory, the description of allegorical meanings in the modern Ukrainian literary texts. Contextual analysis of the interaction of allegory and modern artistic context makes it possible to single out the following features that form “modern allegory”: 1) deformation of the structure of allegory, which is in restructuring, supplementing allegorical components with new semantic connotations; 2) the change of the primary semantics on the basis of ironic-sarcastic and laughter load of a context; 3) coding of semantics; 4) national and cultural labelling; 5) means of addresser’s manipulation; 6) semantic progression; 7) signs of intertextuality. It is substantiated that allegory can intensify the message encoded by the author as a single semantic structure or as a complex of verbal structures that form an integral allegorical message or several allegorical messages. An allegoreme is a unit of textual expression of allegory. Allegoricalness is defined as a process of figurative manifestation and development of allegorical semantics in the artistic text. As a result, a system of implications of the literary text is formed and the general allegorical meaning is shown.
