Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the study of the peacemaking diplomacy of the Holy See in Latin America in 2005-2013 that is, during the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI. The relevance of the study of peace diplomacy of the Holy See in Latin America is due to the importance of studying ways to reconcile countries and nations with the involvement of religious institutions. Therefore, the study of the Holy See’s diplomatic activities in the peaceful resolution of conflicts is important because of the diversity of peacebuilding processes. The Holy See, as the government of the Catholic Church in the international arena, has a large-scale religious structure with a strong administrative apparatus, spiritual doctrine, significant financial base, and most importantly with over a billion believers who profess the dogmas and values of the Catholic Church. And in the political arena, the Holy See has its own diplomatic corps, traditions, rights, and responsibilities that are recognized by the international community and are partially defined by international conventions and the domestic law of the Catholic Church. Therefore, the Holy See has significant potential, as well as historical experience for peacebuilding and reconciliation. In this context, Latin America, where Catholicism is the dominant religion, can be an example where the intervention of the Holy See and the Catholic clergy in international, national, or regional conflicts contributes to peace and security in the region. Analyzing the participation of the Holy See in the settlement of domestic political and international conflicts in Latin America in 2005-2013, it was proved that the involvement of papal legates contributed to the establishment of peace and security, as well as the development of dialogue and international cooperation in the Latin American region.
