The dissertation exams ideological and political struggle in the Church of Roman Syria 30-40-th of the 5-th century. The author examines the features of the religious and political contexts of the Syrian disputes of the 30-th and 40-th of the 5th century. In particular: organization of the Christian church in Roman Syria, connections between Syrians of Rome and the Syrians of neighboring Persia, Antioch school of theology as a reflection of the tradition of Syrian Christianity and the part of common Syrian identity. In addition, the influence of imperial power on church policy in Syria and the role of historical memory as a component of Syrian identity are studied. The main chapter is devoted to the confrontation in the Church of Roman Syria in the 30-th and 40-th of the 5th century: disputes over the overthrow at the Third Ecumenical Council of the native of Antioch - Patriarch of Constantinople Nestorius (428-431). The main church and political groups in Roman Syria, their motives and arguments are revealed, discussions around the condemnation of the legacy of the prominent Syrian theologian Theodore of Mopsuestia were studied. His example examines the attitude of Syrians to prominent representatives of local theology, as an important element of their own religious and local identities.
