In the dissertation research, a theoretical and practical generalization of the problematic aspects of the criminological characteristics of domestic violence has been carried out. With the help of the analysis of the current legislation related to domestic violence, statistical data on the factors that provoke the commission of domestic violence, the number of detected and hidden cases of domestic violence and the results of a statistical survey, a number of theoretical and practical conclusions, proposals for improving the mechanism of counteraction and prevention of domestic violence were formulated. For the first time, five periods of the development of the criminalization of domestic violence in Ukraine were identified, which are formed gradually, one after the other: (patriarchal-tyrannical; enlightening-liberating; idle; modernization; European vector). The dissertation formulates its own definition of domestic violence as a criminological category, which is proposed to be understood as a certain type of aggressive behavior (in the form of physical, sexual, psychological or economic violence) of persons who have family, family, marital or intimate relationships or have lived together or live in the same place, while such behavior causes physical or mental harm to a person or threatens to cause such harm. Determinants of domestic violence are characterized. This definition means a complex of negative factors of social life that provoke the commission of domestic violence. Thus, social determinants can be manifested in the inconsistency and limitations of social reforms, as well as the lack of a mechanism for monitoring the implementation of existing programs, which leads to social insecurity of citizens. Spiritual and moral determinants are determined by the absence of positive ideology in society, the destruction of positive values and ideals, the cultivation of immoral landmarks, and the creation of criminal subcultures. Legal determinants are the consequences of the presence of legal conflicts in the normative legal acts regulating the sphere of prevention and countermeasures against cases of domestic violence, the low level of prosecution of persons who commit domestic violence. Economic determinants can be expressed in permanent crisis phenomena, which provoke a significant reduction in the incomes of certain strata of the population. And the selection of military-political determinants is extremely relevant, because in the conditions of a full-scale invasion, priorities shift in relation to primary problems that require an urgent response, in this regard, problems related to domestic violence are relegated to the secondary plan. It was determined that a person who commits domestic violence is a physically reprehensible person characterized by aggressive behavior or for whom violence is an element of motivation, a tool for achieving a certain result, and such a person is in a family, family, marital or intimate relationship with his victim. In the work, a proper sociological study of the criminological portrait of a person who commits domestic violence was carried out, which looks as follows: a man aged 20–40, married, with a secondary education, mostly without a permanent place of work or a low-skilled worker, prone to drinking alcoholic beverages and committing various crimes, with a low level of social skills or affective disorders of the psyche, who commits violent acts against his family
