The paper presents an analysis of scientific and theoretical concepts and
approaches to the study of adolescent athletes' hubristic motivation, identifies and
describes the factors of development of adolescent athletes' hubristic aspirations.
The scientific novelty and theoretical significance of the scientific work are
determined, which are as follows:
for the first time
- the psychological predictors of adolescent athletes' hubristic motivation were
identified;
- the peculiarities of optimal experiences in sport and sports anxiety in
adolescents with different types of hubristic motivation were identified;
deepened and supplemented the idea of:
- the role of intrinsic motivation in adolescents' sports activities;
- typological features of motivation for sports activity and hubristic motivation
in adolescence;
- the personality of an adolescent athlete through the identification of features
of perfectionism, optimism and self-esteem of sports qualities depending on his/her
type of Hubristic motivation;
- the dependence of the athlete's personal development on the type of his/her
sports activity through the identification of personal characteristics of adolescents
involved in individual and team sports with different types of hubristic motivation;
were further developed:
- means of psychodiagnostics of the athlete's personality by adapting the
methods of studying dispositional optimism, actual motives of the adolescent's
sports activity, self-assessment of sports qualities and abilities;
- means of psychological support for the development of a constructive form
of adolescent athletes' hubristic motivation.
The practical significance of the work lies in the development of a programme
of psychological support for the development of a constructive form of Hubristic
motivation of adolescent athletes, the effectiveness of which has been tested, which
allows it to be used in the practice of sports schools for the purpose of psychological
training of adolescent athletes. The obtained results of the study of psychological
features and predictors of the Hubristic motivation in the structure of sports activity
can be used in teaching psychological disciplines in higher education.
The thesis presents a theoretical generalisation and a new solution to the
scientific task of determining the features and conditions of the development of
adolescent athletes' hubristic motivation.
Based on the results of the theoretical and methodological analysis, the
peculiarities of the formation of the hubristic motivation in sports activities were
determined. In adolescence, sport, as a competitive environment, creates the basis
for the development of humble motivation. Hubristic motivation, which is realised
in sport, is represented by two motives. The motive to achieve superiority is realised
through actual or imaginary comparison of oneself with other athletes. The motive
of achieving excellence is based on internal standards of sportsmanship and is
manifested in high demands on oneself and one's own sports achievements.
The correlation between the types of hubristic motivation and motivation of
sports activity is empirically determined, which determines the characteristic
features of sports motivation in adolescence. In the structure of sports motivation,
the most typical for adolescents is a combination of a high level of sports motivation
and the dominance of the motive of excellence, which contributes to the
improvement of their sports skills. The specificity of the style features of selfregulation of sports activity in adolescents depending on the typological profile of the hubristic motivation has been revealed. Adolescents with the dominance of the
desire for perfection in sports activity are mostly guided by intrinsic motives.
Compared to them, sports activities of adolescents with the desire for superiority are
more stimulated by external influences, which include approval and punishment,
coach's authority, parental attitudes, peer opinion, etc. The lowest scores in all styles
of self-regulation are observed in adolescent athletes with a low level of humble
motivation.
The personal characteristics of adolescents relevant to the implementation of
sports activities have been identified. The highest level of optimistic expectations,
dispositional optimism, and self-directed perfectionism is inherent in adolescents
with a desire for perfection. Adolescents with a low level of hubristic motivation are
characterized by pessimistic expectations, the lowest level of dispositional optimism
and high levels of perfectionism directed at others. The relationship between the
hubristic motive of perfection and self-esteem of qualities relevant to adolescents'
sports activities has been determined.
