Simovych O. Semantic characteristics of traditional words-symbols in the Ukrainian language.

The dissertation deals in complex with the notion of symbol in linguistics. It characterises the specific features of the symbol as a linguistic sign. The object of the research are the archetype and non-archetype words-symbols certified by folk-lore and fiction texts. It is determined that the semantics of the symbol is based on the direct-nominative meaning of the word that performs the function of the symbol; at the same time the word acquires the new meaning in the language system. The research paper reveals the motivation features which determine the connection of the word and the object of symbolization.
