In the dissertation we develop an explanatory model of the Ukrainian surface structures which accounts for word order variations and syntactic aspects of word-formation of synonymous constructs in Ukrainian, and their possible constructive and derivational ambiguity. We experimentally evaluate various frameworks of representing the syntactic structures (i.e. the constituent systems, the dependency trees, the systems of syntactic groups etc.) and we demonstrate that none of them is totally adequate for handling the non-configurational word order in Ukrainian and for representing acceptably cyclic, ambiguous and derived constructs. We present our extension to the framework of the constituent systems, which improve the accuracy of the analysis of the Ukrainian surface syntactic structures comparatively to the alternative generative and transformational models. Particular attention is paid to the problems of modelling syntactic structures with the tree-adjoining grammars, and to modelling mechanisms which create global ambiguity of constructs.
