Essay

The thesis is a synchronic-typological and partly diachronical research of Polish-Ukrainian interlingual homonymy from the point of view of content and expression of nominal units. A complex analysis of genetic, wordforming, structural and semantic aspects of the homonyms is undertaken. Two types of interlingual homonyms - homogeneous and heterogeneous - are differentiated. Each of them has semantic specifity depending on the correlation with the analogous phenomena of polysemy and homohymy within one language: the degree of significant divergences between correlatives; synonimic, antonimic and taxonomic connections of lexico-semantic variants (LSV); their set, in particular its volume; spheres of their usage, stylistic status, peculiarities of combining etc. This approach made it possible to trace the ways of the semantic development of cognate words (the dynamics of LSV in the process of losing some meanings and acquiring new ones, narrowing and widening of meaning etc) and to ascertain the degree of interference within each of the analysed groups of full and partial interlingual homonyms.
