GROMKO T. Semantic Peculiarities of the Popular Geographical Terms of Central Ukraine (on the lexical data of the Kirovohrad Region).

The dissertation investigates semantic structure of the popular geographical terms of Central Ukraine. The object of the investigation is the popular geographical terminology of the Kirovohrad Region. For the first time the semic composition of the local names of geographical objects is subjected to analysis with the help of descriptive, distributional, statistical methods, of ways of comparative-contrastive and comparative-historial methods, and also linguistic mapping. The systemic relations of the semes and the productivity of the semantic models of the investigated lexis are viewed in comparison with their literary counterparts, facts of other Ukrainian dialects, and Slavic languages. Differet types of interconnection, interdeterminabity and interdependence of lexical units are analysed. It has been proved that natural-geographic conditions influence the formation of the semantics of popular geographical terms. The results of this investigation can be applied in semasiology, onomastics and etymolo gy; as a fragment of general Ukrainian Dialect Studies; in the lexicographic practice; in the preparation of special courses and special seminars, during dialectological practice and organization of research work with university and school students
