Essay

Object of investigation: corundum (Al2O3) single crystals. Aim of investigation: complex study of the effect of crystallization front morphology on the quality of corundum crystals, modification of the Stepanov method for growing high quality corundum crystals. Methods of investigation and facilities: X-ray diffraction analysis, optical microscopy, three-crystal X-ray diffractometer, optical microscope MIM-10. Theoretical and practical results, novelty: it has been shown that the crystallization front of corundum at growing from melt always has a cellular structure. It has been found that the main reason of gas inclusions is stipulated by the transformation of the front morphology from the cellular into the frame one. Technological solutions for growing perfect shaped corundum crystals have been elaborated. Field of application: solid state physics, material research science, instrument making, quantum electronics, medicine.
