The dissertation is devoted to the formation, in senior school learners, of the components of reader's competence, being one of leading factors of reading productivity. The essence and structure of reader's competence has been defined as an integral quality of reader's personality, its impact on the productivity of reader's activity has been determined and criteria for the formation of senior pupils reader's competence has been given. We have also elicited the complex of pedagogical and psychological conditions, which enable the formation of reader's competence in the process of Ukrainian literature studying. The programme of its formation has been worked out.
