Dissertation is devoted to studying Orest Avdykovych's "small prose" in close connection with aesthetic and philosophical evolution of the West-Ukrainian short story writing in the 90-ies of the 19th - the first decade of the 20th centuries. The writer's work is analyzed as that belonging to the pre-modernistic and modernistic trends in literature which are characterized by certain genre eclectism, combination of the immanent features of the traditionalistic and modernistic literary epochs. Dissertation describes the innovatory character of the writer's work, which is observer at the level of form mostly. It is emphasized that Orest Avdykovych's fiction is dominated by the existentialist problems which are given original artistic and ideological expression in the outlook and aesthetic system of the early Ukrainian modernism. The conclusions about the originality of the individual style of the writer, which naturally reflected the contemporary philosophical and artistic values, are, drawn on the basis of the multilateral analytical and synthetical investigation.
