Essay

Through the cell selection technique novel highly productive strain of Arnebia euchroma (Royle) Jonst. cu-ltured cells has been obtained. If maintained as a suspension culture it may accumulate up to 8% of shikonin per dry tissue, whose yield would amount to 16-18 g/l for 14 days of growth, or 1.12 g of shikonin per 1 l of suspension for passage. The phenotypic heterogeneity of AE-2 strain was found to be mainly due to hereditary heterogeneity (coefficient of inheritance h2= +0.82), while that of in AE-3 strain, electivelyderived from it, resulted from paratypical variability (h2=+007). Growth and biosynthetic characteristics of the novel AE-3 strain allow to recommend it as an object for the biotechnological shikonin production.
