Konovalova M. Mazepa in Folklore and literature/

The dissertation deals with the interpritation problems' discussion of I.Mazepa's image in Ukrainian, Russian (tsar's) and foreign historiography, Ukrainian folklore and the literature of the given period. A number of questions, connected with I.Mazepa's person, are considered on the dasis of rich original material with the deep comparative analysis. It is proved that there are three views about great Hetman in the historical literature: patriotic, unpatriotic and objective. In historical songs the name of Hetman was accompanied by the epithet "cursed", that came from anathema, and not for "treachery" of the Russian tsar, but for Paliy's arrest. In ancient literature of XVII - XVIII c., the name of the hetman was glorified, by the persons in aftendance.
