Essay

The dissertation investigates the peculiarities of combination ofutopian and antiutopian discourses in V.Vinnichenko's prose of the emigration period, author's analysis of utopian mentality, the concert of ambivalence of the protagonist's personality' the peculiariarities of artistic depiction of scenes of national liberation struggle, the influence of Vinnichenko's theoru of '' self-honesty'' and his ''philosophiness'' on the system of characters, character-making and genre. Vinnichenko's prose of the 20s is a vivid artistic portrayal of a contradictory, rebellious spirit of an artist, depiction of the tragic time of the "new medieval" (N.Berdyaev) and the "epoch of a crowd" (G.Lebon), the "rebellion of masses" (Ortega-y-Gasset) and the "utopian heresy" (S.Frank), antinomy of human nature and the enigmatic childhood world, searching of the primary spiritual source and the senselessness of existence without God. While detaching himself from popular literary tradition, Vinnichenko had widely used variou s types of discourse. Except for ironic (critical), psychoanalytical, existential and super-rational types of discourse which, according to researchers' conviction were defining in Vinnichenko's prose of pre-emigration period, utopian and anti-utopian types of discourses actively interact in his new creative practice. The combination of utopian and anti-utopian ideas in the prose of the watershed period is analysed as a peculiar conceptual means of the author's cognition of the world, which enriches the European artistic tradition and literature researchers' ideas about the anti-utopian model of the XX century. Philosophical thoughts about the "lost paradise" (the defining archetype of the utopian discourse of Vinnichenko) combined with a profound understanding of various philosophical schools ("philosophy of life" of J.-M.Guio, A.Bergson, anthropology and sociology of G.Lebon, psychology of V.-M.Vundt and others), occupy a considerable part of the author's genre spectrum, constantly draw attention of Vinnich enko - the writer of prose, dramatist, philosopher. Connected with the worries about the fate of Ukraine, they entered the power field of his philosophy of happiness. Philosophical and psychological aspects of the depiction of the broken spiritual structure of the protagonists are in the antiutopian discourse. In the story "To the other side" the writer managed to expose (show) disastrous ambivalence of the modernised myth, by seeking refuge in which, the protagonist attempts to protect himself from the dangers of historical cataclysms. The hero's consciousness paradoxically combines mythological and utopian worldview. V.Vinnichenko depicts the atmosphere of a tragic masquerade, in which the reincarnation of both the main and the secondary characters takes place, depersonalisation, dissolving of the unique "I" in the revolutionary "us"; points at the danger of utopian projects. The world of childhood in the collection of stories "Necklace" is a peculiar will space in which the "masters" of today and maybe the future ones attempt to realise their "will for power", a kind of "oasis" of childhood happiness with sunny colours of carelessness, a bridge-head for young heroes, who assert their love and freedom without parental care, power and spiritual potential of immanently kind childhood world in its opposition to the hostile and fatal world of the adults, with the whole imperfect world; one of the sources of utopian aspirations, an island of absolute freedom in the rays of the "lost Paradise"; an enormous game-world. And also - always the beginning for those, who still believe in the divine power of the creation. In the meta-utopian novel "The Solar Machine" the utopian and anti-utopian discourses are engaged in a contradicting dialogue, while not only demonstrating the ambivalence of utopian ideas, but also the rises and falls of the author's ideas in the process of searching for the spiritual source. Trying to find salvation in the illusionary emigration world, the protagonists of the novel "Deposits of Gold" becom e players in the dangerous game with utopin expectations. In the centre of the utopian discourse are the "deposits of gold" - the ghost - image that troubles the ailing consciousness of the searchers. Vinnichenko describes a difficult return of the heroes to their inner totality. Vinnichenko's aspirations to depict the formation of stereotypes of utopian mentality (mass and individual) of the first decades of the XX century in the new light can also be traced in this thesis, as well as the author's use of traditional means of transformation of eternal topics, motives; the attitudinal and philosophical evolution of the artist and the genre and stylistic polyphony of his creative work. Observations and conclusions of this research enable us to re-evaluate Vinnichenko's prose of the XX century 20s. The thesis contributes to the scientific representation of the unity of Ukrainian and world literary processes, to the further study of the interaction of various national literatures.
