The thesis deals with the investigation of genesis of notion and conceptual rethinking of national phenomenon - in the Ukrainian and foreign political science. The author defined subtance and main characteristics of political nation, formulated the paradigm of citizens-territory community as the base of the Ukrainian political nation. The thesis analyses ethnic composition of the Ukrainian population. The author found the dialectics of ethnical and national identity in the process of the Ukrainian nation development.
