The dissertation is devoted to the investigation of actual problems of Hetman Ivan Mazepa's historical image in Ukrainian and foreign literature of XYII - XX centuries. Hetman Ivan Mazepa's literary image was often made depending on authoritative social ideology. The evolution of Hetman's literary image in historical literary process was very changeable. It varied from positive, when Ivan Mazepa was Hetman, through egative and up to a hero at times of raising of national consciousness in XIX - XX centuries.
