The dissertation is devoted to the investigation of place, role and meaning of the phenomenon of fashion in social and cultural processes of the XXth century. The historical evolution of the contensive filling the concept of "fashion" has been traced, the scientific literature on the problem has been analyzed, the principal scientific approaches onto the comprehension the phenomenon of fashion have been regarded. It's nature, characteristic peculiarities and functions have been examined. Clothes and costume have been reviewed as historical forms of fashion existence. The definition of social and historic processes has been provided, its structure and function have been regarded, the peculiar features of social and cultural processes in the XXth century have been substantiated. The ideological and political influences on the development of fashion as structural components within the integral social and cultural system have been analyzed, technique, technological and economical determiners of fashion development in the XXth century have been defined. The phenomenon of fashion has been reviewed in details within the context of art genres and practices of the XXth century (from modern to post-modern) The current state of fashion in Ukraine has been characterized as well as tendencies for the fashion industry have been forecasted.
