Object - I.Nechuj-Levyts'ky's prose works of the 1860 - 1880 -s. Aim - to reveal the peculiar features of character - creation in I. Nechuj-Levyts'ky's prose fiction and to substantiate the central role of ethnic - psychological identification of the protagonists' characters. Methods - structural-semiotic, psychoanalitical and typological ones. Novelty - lies in the attempt to interpret creative activity of the artist in a new way, to work out the principles of new methodology of studying the author's heritage, to disclose the peculiarities of artistic universe of I.S.Nechuj-Levyts'ky deeply. Sphere of knowledge - philology.
