Indices of non-heme iron methabolism were determined in the whole blood in reference groups (healthy adults and healthy neonates) for the first time. New index of non-heme iron methabolism is introduced, namely, transferrin iron concentration determined in the blood cells. Experimental glial brain tumours of rats are characterised by hypoferremia whereas human glial brain tumours are characterised by hyperferremia. Indices of non-heme iron methabolism were determined in patients with iron overload caused by excessive iron entry to the organism in occupational conditions and the influence of alpha-lipoic acid on the indices of iron metabolism in this grouр of patients has been studied.
